What an FD24 Batch Actually Looks Like: Applications, Capacity, and Day-to-Day Economics

Specs on a sales sheet only get you so far. The questions producers actually ask are: How much product can I run? How long will a batch take? Can I really walk away from it? And what does this thing pay for at the end of the month? Here’s a practical look at how the FD24 fits into a working production schedule, across the four product categories it’s most often deployed for.

The numbers that drive everything else

The FD24 holds 8 racks and 160 trays, and it’s rated for 800–1,600 lbs of wet product per batch. At its rated condition (roughly 115°F dry bulb, 70% RH inside the chamber), the heat pump removes up to 24 lbs of water per hour.

Two practical implications fall out of that:

  • The wide product-load range (800 to 1,600 lbs) means the same machine works for a small premium SKU run and for a big commodity run; you’re not stuck with a half-empty chamber on light days.
  • The 24 lb/hr figure is the removal rate, not a fixed cycle time. Actual cycle length depends on how much moisture is in your raw product, the drying temperature you choose, and how readily that particular product releases water at that temperature. A high-moisture vegetable behaves very differently than a marinated jerky strip.

The drying temperature range of 80°–160°F, plus an auxiliary heater that can reach 160°–180°F for kill-step requirements, gives you headroom for almost any food product you’d realistically run on this class of equipment.

Application 1: Fruits and vegetables

This is the bread and butter for the FD24. Sliced apples, mango, banana, tomato, peppers, mushrooms, leafy herbs, anything where flavor, color, and rehydration quality matter. Heat pump drying is well-suited here because you can hold a moderate temperature (often in the 110°–135°F range) for a long, controlled cycle without scorching sugars or driving off volatile aromatics.

A multi-step schedule on the FD24’s controller lets you ramp in gently, hold a steady drying phase, and finish with a cool-down step that prevents condensation on the finished product when you open the door.

Application 2: Pet treats

Pet treat manufacturing has been one of the fastest-growing applications for commercial dehydration over the past decade. Sweet potato chews, jerky-style treats, and freeze-alternative snacks all rely on careful moisture removal. The FD24’s batch capacity of up to 1,600 lbs of wet product is well-matched to the production volumes of small and mid-sized pet brands, and the food-grade construction (stainless steel interior, NSF-listed) keeps you aligned with the standards your retailer audits will look for.

Application 3: Meat snacks

For jerky, biltong, and similar shelf-stable meat snacks, the auxiliary heater that pushes the chamber up to 180°F is the feature that earns its keep. It allows the FD24 to support a documented kill step alongside the main drying cycle. Combine that with the controller’s ability to log temperature and RH every minute throughout a cycle to an SD card, and you have the kind of traceable record that’s useful both for HACCP documentation and for dialing in repeatable recipes batch over batch.

Application 4: Specialty and botanicals

Mushrooms, nutraceutical herbs, florals, and other low-volume / high-margin SKUs benefit from precision more than from sheer throughput. The same controller and remote monitoring that help a jerky producer hit a kill step help a botanicals producer protect color and active compounds by holding a tight low-temperature cycle without overshoot.

“Can I really walk away from it?”

This is usually the second question after capacity, and it’s a fair one. Old-school dryers required a human to babysit them. The FD24 is built to be left alone for the duration of a cycle, with three things working in your favor:

  • Programmable schedules of up to ten steps, each advancing on time, temperature, RH, or a cool-down trigger.
  • Remote monitoring from a smartphone, tablet, or computer, so a supervisor can spot-check a long cycle from home.
  • Minute-by-minute data logging to an SD card whenever a schedule is running, giving you a record of what actually happened, not just what was supposed to happen.

The result is a piece of equipment that fits cleanly into a one-shift or two-shift operation without needing a dedicated operator standing in front of it.

The footprint and install conversation

The FD24’s total footprint is 15’6″ D × 5’10” L × 9’5″ H, with a loading space of 8’2″ D × 5’2″ L × 6’0″ H. It’s an indoor-only unit and requires at least 3 feet of clearance in front of the electrical cabinet for service, plus enough space around the external condenser fan for free airflow. Power options include 480V three-phase 50 Hz, and 480V three-phase 60 Hz, making it straightforward to drop into most existing facilities.

The bottom line

For a producer running anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand pounds of finished dehydrated product per week, the FD24 sits in a sweet spot: enough capacity to matter, precise enough to protect quality, efficient enough to keep operating cost in line, and contained enough to fit inside the building you already have.
