Powering the 100-Series: Heat Pump or Indirect Gas, and What It Means for What You Dry

A dehydrator chamber is only half the equipment story. The other half is the heating system that drives moisture out of your product, and the choice you make there will shape your operating cost, your cycle time, and the range of products you can comfortably run on the same machine. The 100-Series is intentionally built to support more than one answer. Here’s how the three energy options map to the kinds of work an MD110 or MD120 typically does.

The three options, briefly

The 100-Series chambers, MD110 and MD120, can be paired with any of three heating systems straight from the factory:

  • DH-145 high-efficiency heat pump: 145 lbs/hr water removal at rated conditions, drying range 80°–160°F, auxiliary validation step to 180°F, 480V three-phase 50/60 Hz.
  • DH-225 high-efficiency heat pump: 225 lbs/hr water removal at rated conditions, same drying and validation ranges, 480V three-phase 50/60 Hz.
  • GH6 indirect gas-fired burner: 600,000 Btu/h energy output, drying range 80°–220°F, natural gas or propane, 480V three-phase 50/60 Hz.

(Water removal rates are rated at approximately 115°F dry bulb, 70% RH inside the chamber.)

The key thing to understand: the heat pump options recycle their own heat through a closed refrigeration loop, so they don’t require an exhaust stack and tend to win on energy efficiency. The indirect gas option keeps combustion completely sealed off from the chamber air, no contamination, and extends the drying temperature range up to 220°F.

DH-145

For an MD110 holding 2,400–4,800 lbs of wet product per batch, the DH-145 is usually the cleanest match. Its 145 lbs/hr removal rate keeps cycle time competitive without overspending on heating capacity you can’t use, and the heat pump’s energy story is most flattering at this scale: lower kWh per pound of finished product, no exhaust to engineer, no makeup-air handler fighting your HVAC.

This is the pairing producers tend to land on for fruits, vegetables, herbs, and similar items where drying temperatures live comfortably in the 110°–135°F range.

DH-225

The MD120 doubles the chamber length and the load capacity (4,800–9,600 lbs per batch), and the DH-225 is sized to keep up. With a 225 lbs/hr removal rate, it pulls moisture out of the chamber air fast enough to keep drying time from ballooning at the larger load.

Producers who run the MD120 with a DH-225 heat pump are typically operations that have proven their product, are running multiple batches a week, and want the lowest possible operating cost per pound. The math compounds quickly at this volume.

GH6: the choice when temperature or fuel economics tip the scale

The GH6 indirect gas-fired burner is the answer in two specific scenarios:

  1. You need to dry hotter than 160°F. The heat pumps top out at 160°F (with a 180°F validation step). The GH6 extends the drying range up to 220°F, which is the right tool for products that benefit from higher temperatures or that require faster cycle times.
  2. Your local gas economics are favorable. In regions with low natural gas prices and high electricity prices, gas can win on operating cost even after accounting for the heat pump’s efficiency advantage.

Because the GH6 is indirect-fired, the combustion happens in a sealed furnace and only the heated air reaches the product. That makes it compatible with food-safety requirements that wouldn’t tolerate direct-fired equipment, and it preserves flavor and aroma fidelity on sensitive products.

Applications that fit the 100-Series

With the right heating choice, the 100-Series serves a broad mix of commercial drying applications. A few of the most common:

  • Fruit and vegetable processing: apples, mango, banana, tomato, peppers, mushrooms, leafy herbs. The heat pump’s moderate-temperature precision protects color, sugar, and aroma.
  • Pet treats: sweet potato chews, jerky-style treats, and freeze-alternative products. The 100-Series capacity range fits comfortably with the production volumes of most regional and growing national pet brands.
  • Meat snacks: jerky, biltong, and similar shelf-stable products. The auxiliary heat range to 180°F supports a documented validation step on the heat pump units; the GH6 supports higher-temperature profiles when desired.
  • Specialty and botanicals: mushrooms, nutraceutical herbs, florals. Precision and per-cycle data logging matter more than raw throughput, and both 100-Series chambers deliver.

How to choose, in three questions

  1. What’s the highest temperature your product needs? At or below 160°F → heat pump. Above 160°F → GH6.
  2. What’s your delivered cost of electricity vs. natural gas? Run the math against your local utility rates. Heat pump efficiency usually wins, but not always.
  3. What chamber are you putting it in? DH-145 fits the MD110 cleanly; DH-225 fits the MD120; GH6 is available across the line.
