MD110 or MD120? How to Right-Size Inside the 100-Series

The 100-Series gives you a clean choice between two chambers, the MD110 and the MD120, built on the same platform, with the same 8-foot-wide loading area, the same controls, and the same set of heating options. The only thing that changes is chamber length, which determines how much product you can run per batch. That sounds like a simple decision, and most of the time it is. But there are a handful of operational variables that should drive it, and getting them right up front saves a lot of money and frustration later.

The two chambers, in plain numbers

The MD120 is essentially two MD110s back-to-back: same depth, twice the length, double the rack count, double the chamber equipment (fans, vents, sensors). Note the overlap at the boundary; an MD110 maxes out at 4,800 lbs of wet product per batch, which is exactly where the MD120’s range begins.

Question 1: What’s your real per-batch volume?

The most common sizing mistake is buying the larger chamber and running it half-empty. A dehydrator runs most efficiently when it’s loaded close to its rated capacity, and a half-loaded chamber wastes both energy and cycle time relative to the finished product you’re producing.

A good test is to take an honest look at your current weekly demand and divide it across the number of batches you’re realistically willing to run per week. If you’re consistently producing 8,000–12,000 lbs of wet product per week and you can run two batches a week, the MD120 is the right answer. If you’re at 5,000–8,000 lbs of weekly demand spread across multiple SKUs that don’t combine well in a single load, two batches a week on an MD110 may serve you better than one half-loaded batch on an MD120.

Question 2: How many SKUs do you run, and can they share a chamber?

A single chamber is a single recipe. If you’re running one or two SKUs that share a drying profile (similar temperature, similar RH, similar cycle time), it doesn’t matter much whether you have one MD120 or two MD110s; you can keep the bigger chamber loaded.

But if you’re running five or six distinct SKUs with different drying schedules, two smaller chambers (or a phased plan that starts with an MD110) can give you flexibility that a single MD120 can’t. You can dedicate one chamber to a long-cycle product while the other turns over a faster-drying SKU, and you don’t have to wait for one full batch to finish before starting another.

Question 3: How much room do you actually have?

Both chambers share the same 13’4″ footprint depth and 12’0″ height, but the length difference is significant: 15’0″ for the MD110 versus 29’0″ for the MD120. If your processing room can comfortably accommodate a 30-foot footprint (plus the clearance you need in front of the electrical cabinet for service), you have the option to go big. If it can’t, the MD110 is the answer, and stepping up later may mean adding a second MD110 rather than swapping in an MD120.

Question 4: How does your heating choice scale?

This is where right-sizing gets interesting. The 100-Series can be paired with the DH-145 heat pump (145 lbs/hr water removal), the DH-225 heat pump (225 lbs/hr), or the GH6 indirect gas-fired burner (600,000 Btu/h).

For an MD110 sitting at 2,400–4,800 lbs of wet product per batch, the DH-145 is typically the cleanest pairing. For an MD120 running 4,800–9,600 lbs per batch, the DH-225 has the headroom to keep cycle time competitive. The GH6 is available across the line for operations that need drying temperatures above 160°F or that prefer the gas economics in their region.

The point is: you’re not just picking a chamber, you’re picking a chamber-plus-heating combination. A correctly matched pair will outperform a mismatched one even if the chamber alone looks right.

Question 5: Where will you be in 24 months?

The hidden cost of buying the smaller chamber is buying it twice. The hidden cost of buying the larger chamber is paying for capacity you don’t use. There’s no universally right answer, but a producer who’s already in growth mode and has a clear pipeline of new accounts is usually better served by going straight to the MD120, while a producer who’s still proving out the market for a new product line is usually better served by starting on the MD110 and proving demand before committing more capital.
