Going Big: When the MD220 Is the Right Answer for High-Volume Drying

There’s a point in the growth of any commercial drying operation where the question stops being “do we need more capacity” and starts being “how do we get the most capacity into a single chamber without giving up control over the process.” For producers who have hit that point, the MD220 is the top of the MD-Series line, a chamber sized for genuinely industrial throughput, with the same precision-control story as every other Nyle dehydrator. Here’s what it is, when it makes sense, and what to think about before pulling the trigger.

What the MD220 actually is

The MD220 is the largest chamber in the 200-Series, which means it pairs the dual-loading/unloading doors with the chamber’s 16-foot-wide format and the longer 28-foot chamber length. From the MD-Series sales sheet:

  • Racks: 96
  • Trays: 1,920
  • Wet product per batch: 9,600–19,200 lbs
  • Loading space: 16’0″ D × 28’0″ L × 6’0″ H
  • Total footprint: 21’4″ D × 29’0″ L × 12’0″ H
  • Chamber equipment: 6 fans, 4 vents, 4 temperature/RH sensors

Two ways to put those numbers in perspective. First, 19,200 lbs of wet product per batch is roughly the high end of what a single Nyle dehydrator chamber can hold. Second, the MD220 holds double the wet product capacity of the next chamber down, the MD210 or MD120, so the step up to the MD220 isn’t an incremental sizing decision. It’s a capacity decision.

When the MD220 is the right answer

A few profiles where the MD220 tends to be the only sensible choice:

Established jerky and meat snack producers. Once daily production volumes climb into the high four-figure to low five-figure range, running multiple parallel batches on smaller chambers becomes operationally expensive. The MD220 lets you consolidate that production into a single chamber and run consistent recipes across a much larger load.

National-scale pet treat manufacturers. Pet treat brands that have moved from regional distribution to national retail typically need to support sustained high-volume drying across a relatively narrow SKU mix. The MD220’s capacity range supports that profile cleanly.

Co-packers and contract dryers. A single MD220 can absorb production runs for multiple customer brands across a week, with each customer’s recipe loaded into the controller as a separate scheduled program. The chamber turns over quickly thanks to the double-door loading design, and the data logging produces a per-cycle audit trail that contract customers will ask for.

Large-scale fruit and vegetable processors. For producers running seasonal commodity dries, apples through harvest, tomatoes through summer, the MD220’s capacity matches the kind of weekly throughput a regional processor needs to keep up with intake.

Choosing the heating system

For a chamber this size, the heating decision matters more, not less. The MD220 supports the same three energy options as the rest of the line:

  • DH-225 high-efficiency heat pump: 225 lbs/hr water removal at rated conditions, drying range 80°–160°F, auxiliary validation step to 180°F. The heat-pump-of-choice for the MD220, sized to keep cycle time competitive at full load.
  • GH6 indirect gas-fired burner: 600,000 Btu/h energy output, drying range 80°–220°F (natural gas or propane). The right answer when product specs require drying above 160°F or when local gas economics favor combustion over electricity.
  • DH-145 high-efficiency heat pump: 145 lbs/hr. Available across the line, but typically not the right pairing for an MD220 unless the operation is intentionally running smaller, lower-moisture loads.

For most MD220 operations, the realistic choice is between the DH-225 heat pump (best efficiency and lowest operating cost per pound on a moderate-temperature drying profile) and the GH6 indirect gas-fired burner (highest temperature ceiling and often-favorable economics in low-gas-cost regions).

The operational profile of an MD220

A few practical realities of running a chamber this size:

  • Loading and unloading. The double-door design lets two operators load in parallel from a 16′-wide face, which materially compresses the time between cycles. Without that, the labor cost of moving 96 racks of wet product would dominate the schedule.
  • Sensor coverage. The MD220 ships with four temperature/RH sensors distributed across the chamber, so the controller makes decisions based on conditions at multiple points across the loading area rather than extrapolating from one corner. That’s the difference between a uniform finished product and uneven results that you only catch at QA.
  • Schedule and traceability. Multi-step recipes (time, temperature, RH, cool-down) plus continuous data logging, with per-cycle drying log files automatically generated, stored internally, and emailed to recipients you specify, give you the audit trail that high-volume customers and regulators look for.
  • Remote monitoring. A supervisor can spot-check a long cycle from a phone, tablet, or laptop. For an operation running cycles around the clock, that’s not a luxury, it’s how you avoid having to keep someone physically next to the chamber at 3 a.m.

What to think about before committing

The hidden risk of buying an MD220 too early is the same as buying any commercial equipment too early: paying for capacity you don’t yet have demand for. Before specifying an MD220, it’s worth being honest about three things:

  1. Sustained weekly volume. Not your best week, your typical week, twelve months out.
  2. SKU consolidation. Can your product mix actually share a single chamber, or do you need parallel smaller chambers for genuine recipe flexibility?
  3. Facility readiness. A 21’4″ × 29’0″ footprint at 12′ height needs a real home. Power (480V three-phase), service clearance, and either electrical headroom (heat pump) or gas service (GH6) all need to be in place.
