In commercial food dehydration, heat gets most of the attention. But experienced operators know that airflow is often the variable that actually determines drying speed, product uniformity, and end quality. The Nyle FDG600 was designed with that in mind, and its airflow system is one of its most distinctive features.
The FDG600 is powered by a single 25 HP industrial plug fan, a fundamentally different design from the multi-fan circulating systems used in heat pump dehydrators. This high-capacity fan drives strong, consistent airflow across all 18 racks in the chamber, and operators can adjust airspeed to match the needs of their specific product and drying stage.
What makes the FDG600 especially versatile is the reversible flow direction. Operators can run the fan in forward or reverse orientation and schedule direction changes as part of an automated multi-step cycle. Why does this matter in practice? In a large batch chamber, the product on the upstream side of the airflow naturally dries faster than the product on the downstream side. Periodically reversing flow direction during a run evens out this differential, helping operators achieve more uniform moisture removal across the entire batch without having to manually rotate or reposition racks mid-cycle.
Direction is controlled from the Equipment screen on the touch-screen controller, with forward and reverse run times set independently. Both fan direction and fan speed percentage are programmable into each step of the scheduler, so these adjustments can happen automatically as a cycle progresses.
The FDG600’s two 30″ x 30″ intake and exhaust vents are significantly larger than those on Nyle’s heat pump models, reflecting the higher airflow capacity of the gas-fired system. Vent position, expressed as a percentage of full open, is adjustable per schedule step, giving operators direct control over how aggressively the system exhausts moisture at each stage of the drying process.
This is particularly useful for products with a two-phase drying curve: many products benefit from higher exhaust early in the cycle when surface moisture is abundant, then a tighter vent position later when the system is drawing moisture from deeper within the product and needs to maintain temperature more carefully. The FDG600’s per-step vent control makes it straightforward to program this kind of nuanced profile.
The FDG600’s home screen displays real-time readings from four temperature and humidity probes positioned throughout the chamber. This gives operators a richer picture of what’s happening inside the dryer at any given moment, including the temperature differential between the supply and return air, which is a useful proxy for how actively the product is releasing moisture. The trend screen logs all probe data over the previous 24 hours so operators can review the full arc of a completed cycle.
For operations where batch-to-batch consistency is paramount, this level of airflow control and monitoring visibility translates directly into more predictable product quality.
